Grade 4/5

4/5th Grade House League

The 4th/5th grade house league is designed to continue introducing the kids to the game of basketball by teaching basketball skills and game fundamentals. We will focus on team play while also developing individual skills for all players. Having fun and good sportsmanship is always a priority.

League Director:   Stewart Cramer

Season:  The season will be continuous and begin in early November and run through the end of February. It will consist of 9 weeks of games that will be on Saturdays. There will also be an end of the year tournament which will be held on February 24 and 25.

Practices: The teams will practice once a week, a 75 minute evening practice rotating Monday-Thursday. Players are expected to attend practices on a regular basis to learn the grade appropriate fundamental skills needed to compete in game situations. At the beginning of the year coaches will be given examples of practice plans, as well as some drills they can utilize that will help the kids develop their skills.

Games: Teams will play a game once a week on Saturdays at East Middle School big gym. The games will be 5 on 5 and played on 10 foot baskets.  Games will be 40 minutes long, 20-minute halves. The clock will stop every 5 minutes (on a dead ball) for substitutions. The clock will run continuously except for injuries, timeouts, and the last two minutes of the game. During the last two minutes of the game, the clock will stop on all dead balls.

Game Rules:

·         The teams will play man to man defense only, no zone defenses allowed

·         There will be no double teaming allowed, but switching will be allowed

·         No pressing is allowed except in the last three minutes of the game. The trailing team can press the final three minutes (again, no double teaming allowed). The team that is ahead can only press if the lead is 5 or less. Once the lead jumps over 5, they must fall back to half court.

·         Free Throws will be shot only during the last 10 minutes of the game on shooting fouls. We will not shoot one and one on the 7th foul.

·         Fouls will be kept and players foul out of games after 6 fouls.

·         In the event of a tie, there will be a two-minute overtime period. In OT, substitutions will be made after one minute. If the game is tied after OT, the game will end on the next scored basket.

·         Two 60-second timeouts per team per game. One additional timeout will be awarded in OT.

·         The home team provides the game clock operator.

Playing Time:  Playing time is to be evenly distributed among all players who are present at any given game. No player will be allowed to play extra time in order to affect the outcome of a game.
