As in the past we will be offering scholarships to those with significant financial need. Our goal is to make sure that financial concerns do not prevent any boys in our community from being involved in basketball at some level. We expect that demand for scholarships will increase based on the current economic challenges we face. The WBBA has limited financial resources and we do not believe a general fee increase is warranted to fund scholarships. During the registration process, we offer the opportunity to make a scholarship donation to those with the interest and financial resources to do so.
For the 2009-2010 season, scholarships for the travel program will be limited to a maximum of 50% of the program fee. For the southwest and house programs we will require a minimum payment of $50 from all participants and scholarships will be available to cover the balance of the fee (as needed). In cases of extreme hardship, we will work with families to develop payment plans or find alternative sources of funding.
We have posted a scholarship application form on our website (wayzatabasketball.com) that should be completed and submitted to me (bmallaro@deloitte.com) in advance of the registration deadline.
For the 2009-2010 season, the Wayzata Boys Basketball Association (WBBA) is offering programs for boys in grades Kindergarden through 12th grade.
NOTE: For players in grades 9-12 who will be trying out for a WHS team, you will need to register to reserve a spot on a WBBA team (whether Travel or Wayzata Southwest) in case they do not make a WHS team. If they make a WHS team, the WBBA will provide a full refund.
The WBBA offers several programs. They are all listed below.
Fall Clinic to be held on four Saturdays in September/October. Sept. 19, 26, Oct 3, 10 at East Middle School.
Fall Clinic will be broken into two groups:
K and 1st grade together
2nd grade only
** (they could be combined, based on number of kids who sign up)
Clinic sessions times will be 8:30am-10:00am, or 10:30am-12:00pm.
Winter Clinic (K and 1st grade only) to be held on four Saturdays in February.
Focus on fundamental skills-dribbling, passing, shooting, rebounding, and rules of the game
9 Foot baskets, skills stations, informal team play
Fees include Wayzata hoops jersey
Fee: $50 for each session and includes Wayzata hoops jersey
The second grade house league is designed to introduce the kids to the game of basketball, with a heavy emphasis on teaching basketball skills, game fundamentals, and the rules of basketball. Having fun and good sportsmanship is always a priority in Wayzata basketball.

Team Formation: Primarily by schools and special requests
Team Roster: 8 players maximum
Season: The season will begin in early November and run through late January. It will consist of 8 weeks of games. Kids will receive at the end of year a participation medal. There will NOT be an end of the year tournament.
Practices/Games: The teams will play once a week on Saturdays at the assigned elementary schools and will share the court with another team. The teams will have two full practices together before the season starts. At the beginning of the year coaches will be given examples of practice plans, as well as some drills they can utilize that will help the kids with the proper form to help develop their skills.
There will be 90 minutes allotted for the teams each week. The 90 minutes will be broken into a 40 minute practice, 10 minutes for skills competition, followed by a 40 minute game. Just prior to the game starting, there will be a skills competition which includes dribbling, layups, passing, defensive shuffle, and short shots. Each station of the competition will be awarded 1 point to the winning team and will be added to the game score prior to the game beginning. If there is a tie in a competition, each team will awarded 1 point.
The games will be 4 on 4 and played on 9 foot baskets. There will be four 7 minute quarters that will be stopped to change players at 3:30 of each quarter. The teams will play man to man defense with no double teaming allowed and no pressing.
Playing Time:
Playing time is to be evenly distributed among all players who are present at any given game. No player will be allowed to play extra time in order to affect the outcome of a game.
Fee: $100 for the season and include reversible jersey
The third grade house league is designed to continue introducing the kids to the game of basketball, with an emphasis on teaching basketball skills and game fundamentals. We will focus on team play with emphasis on individual fundamental skill development for all players. Having fun and good sportsmanship is always a priority.

Evaluations: Yes, one day session with 5 basic skills stations (layups, shooting, dribbling, quickness, and scrimmage). Height will also be noted with each child. Coaches CAN help in these evaluations.
Team Formation: Teams will be formed based on results from the evaluations, with an attempt to create equally skilled and balanced teams, including height. The availability of coaches will also be considered. We will NOT be utilizing kid’s schools to form the teams.
Team Roster: 10 players maximum
Season: NEW * The season will be continuous and begin in early November and run through February. It will consist of 12 weeks of games. There will also be a one day end of the year tournament.
Practices/Games: The teams will practice once a week, a 75 minute evening practice rotating Monday-Thursday. Based upon availability of gym space, a second practice may be periodically added for the teams. Players are expected to attend practices on a regular basis to learn the grade appropriate fundamental skills needed to compete in game situations. At the beginning of the year coaches will be given examples of practice plans, as well as some drills they can utilize that will help the kids develop their skills. The teams will have two/three full practices before the season starts.
Teams will play a game once a week on Saturdays at East Middle School. The games will be 5 on 5 and played on 10 foot baskets. Kids that try out for travel teams and don’t make a team will be evenly distributed on the house league teams. For those kids not trying out for a travel team, there will be a one day session with 5 basic skills stations (layups, shooting, dribbling, quickness, and scrimmage). One additional timeout will be awarded in overtime. · In the event of a tie, there will be a two-minute overtime period. If the game is tied after overtime, the game will end on the next scored basket. In overtime, substitutions will be made after one minute. Playing Time: Playing time is to be evenly distributed among all players who are present at any given game. No player will be allowed to play extra time in order to affect the outcome of a game. Disciplinary problems must be brought to the attention of the ref and opposing coaches prior to the game or as soon as the problem occurs. Poor play is not a disciplinary problem. WBBA participates in this league run by the Eden Prairie Boys Basketball Association
(EPBBA). Wayzata teams compete with one another as well as other southwestern suburban community teams such as Eden Prairie, Minnetonka, Hopkins, and Orono. The season runs from November through March. The Southwest registration fee includes a reversible jersey, court time, and the end of season league tournament fee.
Number of Teams, Players per Team, and Team Makeup:
The number of teams in each grade level will be determined by the number of players who register (paid registration) and attend player evaluations. Space may be limited, and therefore the number of teams limited, based upon the determination by EPBBA. Each team will generally have between 8 and 10 players. Late registrants will be admitted on a space available basis but cannot join once games begin without permission from the Southwest director. Teams will be formed as parity teams based upon the results of player evaluations. Players who participate in their middle school basketball program are also eligible to play in the WBBA Southwest league.
Playing Time:
This is an equal playing time league enforced by league rules and the use of “equal play
scoresheets” at all games. However, playing time may be reduced for a player based upon attendance at practices and/or games, attentiveness during practice, and disciplinary issues.
Player Commitment:
Players are expected to attend all practices and games. Parents should make every effort to ensure this. WBBA understands that occasional conflicts may arise due to religious, educational, health, or family matters. A paid registration is required prior to participation in any practices or games – no pay, no play.
Player Evaluations:
Players are expected to participate in player evaluations, including those who tried out for a travel team. A player with an unexcused absence (i.e. no advance notification that a player will be absent due to an unavoidable conflict) from evaluations will be placed on a team on a space available basis. A player who has paid and provided a signed registration form prior to the evaluations and notifies the Southwest director in advance that he cannot attend the evaluations will be placed on a team as if he were present for the evaluations. 6th grade players unable to attend the evaluation will be placed in the In-House Recreational League if space in Southwest is limited. The player evaluations occur in November, one night per grade; see the WBBA website for dates/times/locations. Coaches will notify players of team placement and initial practice
schedule soon after the evaluations.
Coach Selection:
WBBA coaches are volunteers (often parents) giving of their time and energy. WBBA provides an equal opportunity to anyone who would like to coach a team. A good understanding of basketball plus good organizational and communication skills are needed. Teams may have a head coach and up to 3 assistant coaches (or co-coaches). A criminal background check will be required of all head and assistant coaches prior to participation in practices/games. All coaches are required to participate in two mandatory coaches meetings prior to the start of the season – one conducted by EPBBA (regarding league philosophy and rules) and one conducted by WBBA (equipment handout, WBBA specific information, final background check form collection).

There is generally one practice per week beginning in November at Wayzata school gyms. Possibility of teams sharing gyms if lack of available court time dictates. Practices generally last between 75 and 90 minutes each, and may occur on Wednesdays or Fridays due to limited court time. Before games begin, there is the possibility of additional practices on some Saturdays. Players should arrive to practices 5-10 minutes prior (a coach must be present as well). Players who cannot attend a practice due to a conflict are expected to contact their coach in advance. Practice schedules will be communicated by coaches and also posted on the WBBA website.
Games:
There is generally one regular league game each Saturday beginning in December. Games may be home or away. Away games involve travel to other communities participating in the league (e.g. Eden Prairie, Minnetonka, Hopkins, Orono). There may be additional games Fridays and/or Saturdays on a limited basis if gyms are available. These additional games do not count in the official league standings but will be used to break ties for the purpose of seeding teams at the end of season league tournament. Players should arrive to games 15-30 minutes prior based upon the preference of the coach. Players who cannot attend a game due to a conflict are expected to contact their coach in advance. League game schedules and rules will be posted at www.epbba.com prior to the start of games.
End of Season League Tournament:
An end of season tournament is held in March, sponsored by the EPBBA. There are multiple brackets (e.g. A, B, C) due to the number of teams and based upon team records.
Super Saver Tournament Option:
Teams are given the opportunity to participate in MYAS Super Saver tournaments on Sundays during the season. These tournaments are a bit more competitive and provide additional opportunity for those players/teams that are interested. Teams sign up for Super Savers on their own, following MYAS guidelines. WBBA will try to group players with like interests – those who are interested in playing in Super Savers plus regular Southwest league, and those who are interested in playing only in regular Southwest league games – without sacrificing the parity team rule. Thus, there is no guarantee that we will be able to form teams this way. There may be an additional cost for participation in Super Savers. The WBBA will fund one (1) of these these Super Savers, but teams may participate in up to four (4) – teams pay for any Super Savers beyond two themselves. Teams may also participate in the state MYAS tournament (either Grade State or Rec State, depending on how team performs during the season), either at their
own cost or as one of their two paid tournaments (but the WBBA will only pay up to the amount of a regular Super Saver).
WBBA and Minnetonka coordinate this league. Wayzata teams will have an opportunity to compete with one another as well as Minnetonka teams and possibly other southwestern area associations (e.g. Hopkins). Grades 11 and 12 will most likely be a combined league. The season runs from December through March. Players that wish to excel in basketball and compete at the highest level within the WBBA Travel Program are selected through an extensive tryout process. FULL

INFORMATION MEETING FOR 4TH/5TH GRADE PARENTS
An information meeting for parents of 4th and 5th grade parents will be held on Wednesday, September 16 from 7:00 to 8:00 PM at Central Middle School (Auditorium). Parents are encouraged to attend to learn about the changes and improvements to our travel program for the upcoming season, as well as the evaluation process.
MANDATORY PARENT MEETING
We will hold a mandatory parent meeting to discuss the upcoming travel season on
Wednesday, October 28 at Central Middle School (Auditorium) from 6:30 to 8:00 PM. This meeting will inform you of the changes and improvements to our program for the upcoming season and answer any questions you might have. Please plan to have at least one parent per player in attendance.
NUMBER OF TEAMS
The number of teams in the travel basketball program will depend on the grade level. The maximum number of teams per grade level will be:
4th grade: 3 teams
5th grade through 8th grade: 4 teams
9th grade: 2 teams

The WBBA reserves the right to make changes to number of players on a team based on the evaluation process, level of play and/or number of players trying out for the travel program.
PLAYING TIME POLICY
The WBBA has established the playing time policy for all travel program players as a minimum 10 minutes per game. The 10-minute playing time policy may vary depending on players’ understanding of the game, attentiveness during practice, attendance and disciplinary issues.
PROGRAM COMMITMENT
The WBBA travel basketball program requires a full commitment from travel players and their parents. Parents should make every effort to ensure players attend every practice and game. However, the WBBA understands that occasional conflicts may arise for religious, educational or family matters. Travel teams play a schedule of weekend tournaments, with approximately half the team’s games on Saturday and half on Sunday. Additionally, each FAMILY is required to volunteer a minimum of 5 hours at our Travel Tournament (annual fundraiser) or donate $150.00 to the WBBA. If for any reason, your son cannot commit to the rigorous travel schedule and commitment as outlined above, PLEASE CONTACT TIM McKEE BEFORE THE TRYOUT PROCESS BEGINS. Any and all commitment and/or volunteer issues to be addressed by the travel director and WBBA President for final direction.
TRAVEL TEAM EVALUATIONS
A mandatory 3 day evaluation process is designed to determine the skills of each player
so they can be placed at the most appropriate level for their grade. Evaluations are open to any player in 4th grade through 9th grade; however, there is no guarantee that each player participating in the evaluation process will make a travel team. Tryouts are closed to parents. Results of team formation will be posted on the website as soon as possible after evaluations are completed by player first name and tryout number. Teams might be posted with or without the coach identified. Players not selected for a travel team must attend an additional evaluation for placement in the Southwest or House program. The exception to this is at the 4th grade where players not selected for a travel team will be placed on a house team based on information gathered during the tryout process.
EVALUATION WEEK
The tryout schedule for grades 5-8 is set for October 26th through October 30th. The final evaluation schedule will be available by October 1st.

COACH SELECTION
The WBBA coaching selection committee provides an equal opportunity to anyone who would like to be considered for a coaching position for the travel basketball program. The WBBA strives to select the best qualified candidate either parent or non-parent for the program. Each head coach will select one assistant coach. Criminal background checks are required for all coaches. There will be a mandatory meeting, equipment check out and coaches’ clinic on Saturday, October 31, 2009.
TRAVEL PRACTICES
Grades 5-8
The first travel practices will start the week of November 2, 2009. Each team will practice on average twice a week. Average practice session is 1.5 hours. Players are expected to be at the gym 10 minutes prior to the practice time. Player is expected to communicate with his coaches if he will miss a practice for some reason. Practices will be held Monday through Friday.
Grade 4
The first travel practices will start the week of November 9, 2009. Each team will practice on average twice a week. One of the two practices will likely fall on the weekend (during non-tournament weekends). Player is expected to communicate with his coaches if he will miss a practice for some reason.
TOURNAMENT SCHEDULE
The travel tournament schedule is as follows:
4th grade will play 6 tournaments and 2 super savers
5th and 6th grade will play 11 tournaments plus a game at the Target Center
7th and 8th grade will play in 12 tournaments
9th grade which will play 9 tournaments
The Head Coach can elect to register and play in 2 additional tournaments at their own expense. The complete tournament schedule will be posted by September 15.
We definitely need volunteers to coach at all levels. To volunteer as a coach (head or assistant), you need to complete two forms: A Volunteer Form and a Background Check Authorization Form. Once complete, please mail both forms to WBBA, P.O. Box 46014, Plymouth, MN 55446.
