Program Information

Review the following grade level information sheets for details regarding the various programs and options offered at each grade level:

2nd Grade House League

The 2011 2nd grade house league is designed to introduce the kids to the game of basketball, with an emphasis on teaching basketball skills and game fundamentals. We will emphasize team play and individual fundamental skill development for all players. Having fun and good sportsmanship is a priority.

League Director:   Stewart Cramer

Season:  All 2nd grade games and practices will be held on Saturdays at Gleason Lake Elementary.  The teams will be created by schools and special requests and communicated to the coaches in early November. The season will begin with the first practice on November 12. There is NO season-ending tournament in 2nd grade.

Practices:  The first two Saturdays of the season (November 12 and 19) are 60-minute practices. Subsequent Saturdays will have both the practice and game on the same day.  Each 90-minute time slot on game-day Saturdays will be split between practicing (40 min), skills competition (10 min), and the game (40 min). At the beginning of the year coaches will be given examples of practice plans, as well as some drills they can utilize that will help the kids develop their skills throughout the year.

Games: The season will consist of 7 games on Saturdays in December and January.  The games will be 5 on 5 and played on 9-foot baskets.  Games will be split into four 7-minute quarters with the time stopping at 3:30 each quarter to rotate in the other players.  The clock will run continuously except for time outs or there is an injury.  We will use mostly 9th grade referees who are players in the Wayzata basketball program - they are instructed to help the players, who are just learning, and to be very reasonable in not calling too many fouls or violations (such as traveling).  As the season progresses, the referees will call a few more violations (especially double dribble), so the boys learn the rules of basketball.

Playing Time:  Each boy will play equal playing time to the best of the coach’s ability. No player will be allowed to play extra time in order to affect the outcome of a game.

Game Rules:

·         The games will begin with four skills competitions, with one game point awarded to the team who wins each competition.  Competitions are: Passing, layups, short bank shots, and a dribble relay

·         The teams will play man to man defense only, no zone defenses allowed

·         There will be no pressing, double teaming, or switching on defense - players must stay with their player.

·         We will line up the boys at the beginning of each quarter and substitution so each boy knows who he is to guard.  We ask that this be done quickly to avoid unnecessary delays.

·         Free Throws will NOT be shot in this league - if fouled during a shot, team takes ball out of bounds.

·         We will keep score, starting with the skills points, but no overtime will be played in the event of a tie.

·         Even though there are no 3-pointers or free throws, we will still score by 2 points per basket.

·         Two 60-second timeouts per team per game.

·         The home team provides the game clock operator.
